Just for reference, the distinction between arnis, escrima and kali seems to be one of region only.
Taken from:(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filipino_martial_art)
"The three major branches of Filipino martial arts are Arnis typically from the northern Luzon regions, Eskrima from the central Visayas regions, and Kali from the southern Mindanao regions." |

Thanks, for that, Cross. I often wondered if this was the case. _________________ Success is where preparation meets opportunity.

Heloooo Karate Forums..It's been a while since I last posted, so I think most of you might not remember me...But to the topic..here in the Philippines, the term Arnis is generally use, and yeah..It's a regional thing..We Filipinos have about 107 languages, and while the national language is derived mainly from Tagalog, there are many more Cebuano speakers than tagalog (My main is cebuano but I am very much fluent in tagalog)...Well. power-relationships playing here, Some cebuanos feel that the tagalog should not be the dominant language, and it is reflected in the regionalization of terms. I think in cebu its called Escrima...I might be mistaken. _________________ The stronger swordsman does not always win. |

If you don't mind me asking, how well regarded is the Doce Pares system of Escrima in the Philippines and it's Panatukan (empty hand / boxing) also? |

my arnis teachers about a year ago told me what bushido man said, it all starts with the sticks, and in reality, this is what most filipinos in college and high schools learn. Sorry BMW, im not really into arnis, but escrimadors from Cebu are generally respected and are highly skilled. Panatukan i've obly heard and seen in the lecture/demo in our class but haven't really been familiar to it. Sorry, i'm not much of a help. _________________ The stronger swordsman does not always win. |

Thanks for the reply. I'm pleased to hear escrimadors from Cebu carry good skill and receive appreciation. |

Sounds like fun.
I just wish I had a place around to do some sword work. _________________ Success is where preparation meets opportunity.
