I just noticed the post where someone had pictures of their Black Belt Test. Kind of curious. For a Black Belt Test at my Dojo, the Sensei will not allow cameras, camcCorders, or extra people to watch the testing.
Only the Judges, candidate and Uki are allowed.
How is it with testing at other Dojos?

Usually open and encouraging people close to the one testing to come over and give their support.

Ours are open, but the audience stays back until the actual ceremony (partially because we are wielding swords at times).

Cameras and camcorders are allowed, but they may not be for the Master's demonstrations at the end of the world tournament.

Hehe, that was my post. We're encouraged to have friends and family come and show their support.

I have heard of a number of schools where Black Belt testing and promotions are strictly closed door, which makes sense in a lot of ways.

Everyone and anyone are welcome at ours. Our instructor tries to encourage beginners to come and watch as due to our class structure they rarely get to see how the higher grades move. Guests and visitors are welcome too as it exposes them to the art and shows them that blackbelts do not have mystical powers, they just train hard. Most people will bring cameras and camcorders.

Ah, good point. All the under-belts are also encouraged to attend. Even more so as they approach the time when they will begin testing there as well.

At our Black Belt testings, all are allowed, cameras are allowed, but no recordings. I think it is silly, but hey, not my call to make.

During our testings it really doesn't matter...you don't know you're being tested until the instructor (me) says "Congratulations...you've just passed and been promoted."

You know Montana that is an awesome (quite literally) way to do it. I think it would encourage students to focus more on becoming good than "when I am I going to promote?"

I agree with gamedweeb. I do think this is a nice idea.
