THe reason i ask is because i am thinking about going into Law Enforcement and i want to know what MA would be good for that.
Any cops on this page? If so what MA do you do or what MA do you suggest? |
I used to know someone who was a police officer,he did pankration at my school for a few years,we've had security guards come for some training too.
I do believe though that the police academy does have some of their own self-defense classes and special arresting tactics though they might still suggest taking a martial arts course.
In Canadian Forces they teach judo, karate self-defense,kickboxing,jujitsu and wrestling. You have a choice of which one to take. |

| Yes, a grappling art would be good for you, but DON'T stop practicing Muay Thai. You need to be a well rounded fighter. A pretty good combination could be Muay Thai+JuJitsu+Filipino Kali (for weapons). |
I agree.Sounds like a good combination to me. |

Well I still think all these people advocating Muay Thai are missing the point that a police officer is not supposed to be beating the life out of suspects in a one-on-one hand-to-hand confrontation.
I don't think it'd even be a good base for law enforcement. The whole attitude and approach is wrong.
For law enforcement you want to subdue the suspects with minimum fuss and damage, preferably with controlling locks and stuff, not punching them in the face so they can sue you later for excessive force.
The whole idea of a police officer is to keep the peace, not fight it out for glory with criminals, reducing them to a bloody pulp.
I'd still recommend something like BJJ, Judo, Aikido, Krav Maga, or even normal Ju-Jitsu (which actually incorporates police type arrest and search routines in some schools, which were used for Japanese police training).
Lest anyone doubt me, consider the whole Rodney King affair, and how differently it might have turned out if instead of three armed guys pounding the life out of an unarmed man, there was even one competent, level headed Judo or Aikido practitioner on the squad capable of subduing and arresting the suspect with minimal fuss, and without leaving a mass of bloody, semi-permanent injuries for all to see even weeks later.

Well that's true to some extent, however some criminals need to be beaten to a pulp and deserve it,I mean criminals like murderers,sex-offenders,and petophiles.
Unfortunately some police officers take advantage of their power to the extreme and do use it just for the hell of it or because one or two cops might be racist against a particular race, but that doesn't happen all the time.
Chances of a cop getting sued is very slim, most police men will stick to each other and most will keep quiet about the whole situation even if they know what happened is wrong.
I think cops should be able to learn muay thai, what happens if they come across a criminal who knows muay thai and tries to kick the crap out of them. After all by law,in Canada anyways,a cop cannot pull his gun unless he sees a weapon being pulled or suspects it,so he might as well be able to learn muay thai.
So if a criminal refuses arrest and starts going wild and tries to beat up some cops, but doesn't have a weapon a cop should have the right to fight back since he can't pull his gun.Either you let a cop learn muay thai or you let him pull his gun, without even seeing a weapon, why should the innocent cops have to take a chance of getting beaten up badly. |

True, but that dosent mean LE officers are allowed to play judge jury and executioner on the spot.

Not these days.

thats about a 1 out of 1000 chance.
I dont know about Canada but here in the US an officer can use whatever force neccesary as long as its justified...whitch means if Mike tyson is charging you your not going to try and Fight him....I dont think anyone would find an officer guilty of excessive force if mike tyson attacked them..unless the officer did something extreme.
I think there are other systems that suite LE officer better than MT. |
