Let's dream a bit. Someone says, "I'll build a 30' x 30' room by your specifications for training." This will be in your back yard for private training. You'll have a bathroom w/ shower attached (so that's not an issue.) From floor to ceiling, what would you put in it?
A/C or not?
Flooring?
Mirrors?
Ballet bar?
Hanging bags?
These are just thoughts....What would you do with your space? Dream a bit _________________ Being a good fighter is One thing. Being a good person is Everything. Kevin "Superkick" McClinton |

ALRIGHT!!! My dream come true!!!
First, some good mats for the floor, not too soft, but soft enough for forms and sparring, but for falling when doing Hapkido. Two different colors of matts; one for two rings in the room, and the other for borders. Our school uses red and blue; I like that.
I would have a hanging bag in one corner, with enough room to work around it all angles. I would also have 2 or 3 Wavemaster XXL standing bags. In another corner, I would put a headache bag, and a speed bag.
Mirrors would line two walls opposite each other; two walls would not be mirrored. Mirrors only 5 foot high, I think. One wall would be a solid bookcase shelving unit, from floor to ceiling, to hold all of my MA books. That is a MUST!
I would have a makiwara board installed as well. I have never had the opportunity to train on one, and would love to.
AC and heating would be a must. Perhaps a small desk and chair in one corner for jotting down notes, and sitting and having a coffee or beer with training partners afterwards to discuss training or good times. Oh yeah, need the minifridge, too! _________________ Success is where preparation meets opportunity.

ugh amazing, but so depressing that it's not true!
ok well ac and heat, yes. only because training in the freezing cold, not only stinks but hurts!
for the flooring, it would all be matted, im not sure with what though, i haven't had enough experience with the puzzle mats to make a determination on those.
definately ballet bars, we have them all around my dojo and they're awesome!
definately mirrors, they are such a huge training tool, my dojang has them and they've been nothing but help.
it must have multiple makiwara boards, and many weapon stands so no floor space it wasted.
my dojo has a ring in it, and i love that about it, so that would have to be there.
i'd to two heavy bags from the ceiling so it can be hit from all angles like bushido said.
i'd also want a massive storage area for things like, medicine balls, mits, gloves, muy thai pads, kicking shields, sparring gear, etc
and the only other thing is...and i HAVE to cheat...i'd without a doubt need an office, and i'd like it separate from the dojo/dojang because i don't like to do work in my training area, i like to leave the stress outside those walls.
but thats all i can think of so far. _________________ "Smile. Show everyone that today you're stronger than you were yesterday." |

I have often thought about building a raised platform with a gabled roof and leaving it open, or perhaps screening it in. I could wire it up for a couple of fans and just a little lighting. It would be nice to have a heavy bag at one end and mounted on some sort of track system so I could slide it out of the way when not needed. Perhaps some makiwara boards mounted in an appropriate spot and some mats to use from time to time.
I can imagine training out there on a cool fall night with the breeze blowing.

I'd have the ballet bars, mirrors on 2 opposing walls (covering 3/4 of the walls.
A Century "Conerman" holding a bannana bag.
A/C & heat.
A strikining matted floor on most of the floor. Except a 12' x 12' area for a thicker matted floor for throws, locks & grappling.
A large flat screen tv & camcorder set up for taping forms & techniques.
A 6' x 6' humidified closet for storing leather pads, gloves, paddles, etc. _________________ Being a good fighter is One thing. Being a good person is Everything. Kevin "Superkick" McClinton |

Wow, dream come true. My wish list is pretty simple.
Wrestling mats across the entire floor. A couple of heavy bags at one end, one thai bag. A double ended striking ball somewhere near the other bags and a speed bag mounted in that end somewhere as well.
AC/heat is mandantory. Yeah, I'm a wuss that way. No mirrors, bars, or anything else that would probibly just get broken anayway.
Somepalcke to store equipment would be nice. |
