I think that boxing would be a good time. However, kickboxing would be fun as well. Two really different aspects. _________________ Success is where preparation meets opportunity.

One thing boxing is great for is teaching you to stick in there and duel it out. I've seen quite a few bouncy martial artists. I'm not a fan of bouncing, I think it makes you unstable on your feet and uses up precious energy. Boxing is about footwork and ducking as much as it is about punching. I learned to duck more when I can, instead of blocking everything or physically moving out of the way.
I'm sure there are some good books out there about martial artists taking up boxing. I found a little book I like that offers a fresh perspective: Boxer's Start-Up: A Beginner's Guide to Boxing, by Doug Werner (1998). He goes around trying things he's never done before. Interesting take on the sport by someone who has no experience with it or any other martial art - kind of fun.
Karate K, you might take a look also. _________________ Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.

| I've read Boxer's Start Up, it's a nice read.Another good boxing book is Box Like the Pros By Smokin Joe Frazier. It's very similar in content to Boxer's Start Up. |

Talk about your credibility. Smokin' Joe might know a thing or too. _________________ Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.

I have also seen a book put out by Turtle Press, called Boxing, the American Martial Art. Has anyone read it, or know anything about it or the author? I have bought many books through Turtle Press, and have been eyeing this one for quite some time, but haven't bought it yet. _________________ Success is where preparation meets opportunity.

I have trained with quite a few females that have gone pro in boxing, kickboxing, and muay thai relatively quick. There are pros and cons with this, and it happens because not as many females are fighting. Another bad thing is(trust me, this is true)that some promoters will have an attractive female fight on their card because they'll put her on the poster to sell tickets. Some of these females are in no way pro caliber and get hurt/lose bad.
I won't name who, but if you saw the tv special on the 3 females that went to Thailand you might know what I'm talking about. I have trained with 2 of those females that were on that special and one of them had no right to go to Thailand(were better females on the show, but they weren't as pretty)..but she is attractive.
Now, there are definitely some very good female fighters out there, so don't get me wrong..just be careful of not going pro before you're ready. I once trained with someone with some serious potential that was offered pro fights and took them too soon and lost bad in Paris against Orlando Weit's wife. Someone I will run from is Lucia Rijker, that is one deadly female. Another female I used to train with that will kill me at will on the ground is Cindy Hale(www.cindyhale.com), she's also a decent kickboxer now. So I hope none of you take my views as sexist because there are some very deserving females out there but there are some females being offered "pro" fights too soon that aren't ready and some of them are getting this just because of their looks. |

Very good point. I couldn't find anything on Cindy Hale; that website is for some realtor in Texas. Lucia Rijker played opposite Hillary Swank in Million Dollar Baby. I haven't seen it, but she looks very formidable. In fact, I'm not sure she's even lost? _________________ Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.

Boy, if she teaches submission grappling in Gig Harbor, I missed out. I used to live 20 miles from there! Too bad. _________________ Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.
