Well, we have a a thread of the things NOT to say to an instructor, so I thought I'd start a thread of the amusing things you've had students say to you.

I'll start with one that happened while I was helping to teach the kid's class this morning. One of the other black belts was explaining the body mechanics behind why a certain self defense multi-strike combination that a student was trying to come up with wouldn't work the best.

The student looks and him and says, "Seriously?" Then pauses and thinks for a minute, and then after the gears turned for a moment he declared, "Oh, WOW, you're right!"

Just the other day, a brand new student, who was only 5 years old, came sheepishly walking up to me just before class was to start.

Our eyes met for a few seconds and then this student looked away towards his mom, in which mom is trying to encourage him with gestures and her mouth silently moving, to ask me something.

He mouths back, "OK Mom!" Then he looks at me again.

"Yes. Can I help you young man?" I said.
:::No answer:::
"It's ok, whatever it is, it's ok?" I reassured him.
"Well..." he starts.
"I tied it all by myself!" he says while pointing at his belt
"Did I do it right?" he asks me.
"I didn't know if I was to make 4 knots or 5 knots. I forgot! Mom didn't know nothing!" He said back with such a firm look on his face.

This young man had tied his belt one knot after another on top of each other knot, so much, that the ends of the belt were barely visable.

One of my instructors ran over and fixed it for him real quick.

I didn't outwardly laugh because that might've hurt the little fellow, I just gave him an approving smile. But, inside, I was rolling.

When all said and done...

"Ooohhhhh, it only needs one knot? Mmmmmmooooooommmmmm!!!!!" he exclaimed after smacking himself on his forehead.

You just had to see it and hear it!

Easrly in my teaching (1978-80) I was often asked by new students.. "Do you think you could defeat/take Bruce Lee?"

My answer was always surprising to them I think.

"Absolutely! Dig him up and bring him here and I'll kick his butt!"

That was funny.

One of mine asked of I could blow out a candle. He keep asking this for a few days. So I got a candle. When he had asked once more, I lit it and extringuished it out by blowing on it.

He was so confused, I then quickly replied "Happy Birthday"

He was confused even more.

Just this week:

Student: "Excuse me Mister, uh, I mean Sensei. When will we be meditating?"

Me: We do that at the end of each class.

Student: "Uh, no. Uh... meditate." he hopped into the air. "Med...uh...TATE."

Me: Meditate? Or levitate?

Student: "Yeah! When will we be medi...levitating?"

Me: "... Oh! Next week."

Student: "OK!"

Yep. Levitating. Next week kids. Mark it on the calendar.

While practicing katas or kihon a white belt will always ask:

"Is class almost over?"
