I prefer stand up sparring to grappling. Although I do like grappling, I don't get to do it much.

To answer your question about improving grappling, I think practicing at about half speed may let you experiment without the pressure of a real match. I've never done this with grappling but I have with sparring, throws, etc and it really helps.
