one of the main things I think about is the readiness to defend yourself with your martial art.. I mean really ready.. does anybody know the actual chance of blocking someone who is throwing you wild haymakers?? it is really slim.. ... Do you feel you are honestly ready mentally to handle a heart rate that high when danger arrives?? do you think you can react fast enough and not freeze? cause I am a firm believer that any martial art can work if the persons head is in the right place in real danger.. lets try to stay on topic please.. I would like all of you to give your honest answer..

Honestly I was nervous about fighting and sparring before taking up an mma class. By being forced to fight and actively train, my body got used to it and my nerves no longer get worked up- in fact my training has helped me stay cool in various situations. Last year before Christmas I was harassed by a group of drunks who kept on following me through an empty street at around 12:30 at night. I mentally was prepared to fight if need be and I was looking at angles for attack. However I kept a sense of humor and ended up with all of the guys saying drunkenly how cool I was by the end of things. Nevertheless I am not intimidated anymore by potential or real threats from people- I am ready to fight. However as with that situation, I always keep my options open...1 against 7 is not good odds.

In my school we do a good deal of kumite practice (and many times what they do is pair lower level students with faster more skilled higher level students). It is good for both. It helps the upper level people practice self control and gets the lower level students used to attacks coming at them fast. I know it is nothing like the real thing when your life might be in danger but to some degree I feel if is absolutely necessary (my life depended on it) I could defend myself.

However I have never been in a street fight in my life. I think one of the lessons of martial arts (and Karate in particular) is how to avoid putting yourself in a position where you will have to fight.

I have been in many professional fights and also many street fights where this so called heart rate increase happens. No i am not scared because if i am it take the focus off what is happing and what is going on. You need to control the fear dont let it control you.

In the past, I struggled with this. Now, with my job, I have become more comfortable with it.

One thing that I do notice is that I don't have time to get psyched out if things just "happen." However, if I stand across from someone, and they start building the situation up, I don't deal with the rush as well.

I would love to have the opportunity to work out in a style like MMA or Boxing, for the benefits that NightOwl speaks of.

Pretty scared im similar with bushido man if it was not built up too much then im sure enough in my own abilities that I would just react.

I think a lot of it comes down to being confident in your own ability. If you really belive that you can take down the guy then you probably will.

that is what my instructor has told me.. to have faith in my skill.. I was so scared in highschool to fight that I didnt even want to go to school sometimes, untill I was 17 and I turned into the very thing that I hated, which was a bully, after that I was never picked on, I was the one doing that bulling then, untill I got my head handed to me, after that, I became friends with this guy kicked my butt.. who just so happened to be a student of my future instructor at the time, and so I started going and it really has changed me a lot.. A LOT..

I'm a bit of an adrenalin-a-holic, and since I don't have the money right now for adventures in foreign jungles or skydiving, I walk around thinking... "You know... If someone in the world has to be attacked tonight, please let it be me."

The only real fight-like thing that I've had was waiting in the New York Subway, and I had something in my hand and someone grabbed my wrist from behind, and I back-kicked him in the balls and took off. It was awesome.

I know it sounds like I'm a 19-year-old boy instead of a girl in her mid-20's, but I'm just being honest here.

I really don't know anymore how mentally ready I am for fighting.
