Have to go with a spear. It has enough length to fight from a distance plus a point to end a fight quickly. Second choice would be a Katana.

I would have a variety depending on what the opponents weak range is:

For Short range weakness:
Sai

Mid-range:
Katana (for a Eastern base)
or Longsword (Western based tournament)

Long range:
Bo (East)
Spear (West)

Knowing your opponents weakness enables you to exploit them. Therefore, the above combination adds intelect in as an additional weapon, constantly weilded in accordance with the rules

Both of these weapons existed in both cultures. Is it really necessary to differeniate them?

I feel the need to differentiate - I'm not too fond of the yari. As far as staves go, I do like the quarterstaff, I just like the spear better.

What I meant is if it is necessary to differentiate east from west. Both weapons existed in both cultures.

I have almost zilch weapons training, but if I had to go at it I'd like a good ol' fashioned broadsword! GOGO western weapons!

Katana no question its the best weapon there is in my opinion although the chinese broad sword comes close and also the chinese spear. I love nunchuku but they lack control when you stike an opponent so im going to go for a Katana.
