While I don't think the knife can be underestimated, I'd like to see Dan Inosanto doing that video with Bob Munden (quick draw world champion with a .02 second draw time) Quite frankly, if any of us are attacked by a highly skilled knife specialist, we're probably in trouble. But that doesn't just go for knives. Given their behavior (which seemed like pretty poor police work) any college wrestler could have taken them down and started to put the hurt on them If the "police" in that video were attacked by a world class nunchuck, meteor hammer, three sectioned staff, or even peanut butter and jelly champion they were going down in a bad way.

just my $.02

The second video is disturbing. If the attacker had not turned to face someone else, the shop keeper would most likely have been killed. Had he went for his gun instead of trying to defend himself unarmed, he would definitely been more seriously hurt. He'll have quite a scar as it is.Think about the customer at the door in the very start of the video. Can you imagine being there looking at candy or the magazine rack one second and the next you're bleeding from your neck?

Also, at 34/45 seconds...dows he fire sideways? I'm not sure why he didn't pull his gun out from the get-go though, it didn't seem to be terribly out of reach. I suppose the situation was sprung on him and there wasn't a whole lot of time to react perfectly.

Anyhow, no arguments with the effectiveness of a knife, particularly in select situations. However, if I had to put my money on anything in a fight outside of ten feet, it would probably be a gun.

He pulled the slide and fired once before the gun was oriented upright. By the second shot it looked more upright.

So he's quarter gangster? Or just a slight coincidence?

I just think he fired before getting into proper position. Like shooting from the hip. Then again, they shoot from the hip in movies because it looks cool.

No, this guy is too busy being a productive citizen to be gangsta.

Both sets of videos are good videos. It shows two things of importance: 1, being ready; 2, knowing how to properly deploy the weapon you have. I know tallgeese preaches it quite a bit, and I believe him, when he talks about being able to deploy the weapon is as important as being trained to use it.

That was one thing Inosanto had on his cop trainees in the first video; he can obviously pull his knife quickly. Fixed blades are great that way. I've even seen some folders out there now that are engineered so when you pull them, the back edge of the blade catches on your pants and unfolds the knife as you draw it; fantastic knife, and I will be searching for one of those.

The guy with the 9 mm is also good at deployment. He also recognized the situation pretty readily (likely a product of knowing what he wanted out of making the video), but still, it proves a valid point; be prepared.
