Me and my younger brother, who is about 5'10" and weighs 300 some pounds decided to change our sparring rules one time. We allowed head contact with the hands (light contact, acknowledging good hits), and we decided to allow throws and takedowns. I am 5'7", and 245, so I aint gonna wrestle this boy too much.

Anywho, we go along, and I get pretty good shots with some head kicks, and some high hand strikes. He gets good hand strikes, and believe me, he can kick, too. I got taken down a few times, so we were pretty even. Well, I am going along, and I get to chasing him with a combo, and end up with my right leg set behind his right leg, and I had my hips low, and my right arm around his chest. So, I try to hip throw the guy.....very bad idea!!!! I tried to push once, then another time, then I looked at him, and he smiled, like this: , then proceeded to hip toss me about 5 feet in the direction of his choice!

In the end, I gave him the match, and we had a good laugh about the whole thing.

Does anyone else have any good natured, laugh-at-yourself sparring stories like this one? Share 'em, if you like!

I'm 6'6", and 180 pounds. My instructor is about 6'1", and about 185 pounds, so we're both the opposite of you and your brother - light and fast. We were dancing one day (not really dancing, in case the imagery was confusing you), and both came in at the same time with axe kicks using our rear legs (kick straight up as high as you can, then drop it on your opponent). Mine started a split second before his, and he saw it, turned his hips, and knife-edged (side kick) the back of my knee that was in the air. I fell rather hard and very amusingly on the ground with a lound crash that made everybody in the dojo stop their sparring and turn and look. It was a good reminder that, no matter how good I get, somebody taught me my tricks.

Hey, c'mon, I aint too slow!

Got stuck with the leg up high, huh? That stinks, especially when everyone is around to see. I was fortunate; it was just me, my brother, and a few friends around as witnesses.

My story is rather hilarious. I was sparring with another student, it was one of my first time doing free sparring and he'd been doing it for about a year longer. I'm 5'10" and 280 pounts, he's 5'10" and about 240. I did a slow start to a head-level roundhouse kick and he swept my support leg very quckly. This prompted me to fall backward, and I landed almost completely flat...at the same time as landing I unleashed gas so loudly that I wouldn't be surprised if they heard it the next town over!

Everything in the dojo stopped for at least five minutes until we got control of ourselves again.

I was teaching a sparring class and was watching several students fight a particular student whom had a great side kick. Everyone of them were getting nailed in the chest because they were not moving out of the way. I was attempting to demonstrate how one should side step this young man's fantastic kick and I was using him as my opponent to demonstrate. Yep, took his sidekick right to the chest in front of everyone. Great job side stepping that one! Great kick!

about 7 years ago, a buddy and I competed in a poorly run tournament in Manhattan.
got there at 8:30amsaturday morning, competed at 6:30pm. had about 20 people come out and watch both of us (friends and family)
About 5:45, my buddy was doing a leg stretch and ripped the back seam of his GI pants (the entire seam busted open displaying his boxers)
Everyone in our group witnessed the ripping of the uniform
and this was even greater bonus, The ring next to ours was women's forms 17+, they heard the rip and began to giggle too.

no time to buy a new pair of pants and change, he competed with his aired out GI Pants. (He did not want to competed, but the group demanded he fight because they were standing around for almost 10 hours. i cannot write how funny this was, or all the commentary from my buddies )

He did not perform well. but what a great story. lost his first point sparring bout, and then immediately changed.

A brown belt was sparring with our sensei to show everyone how to sweep and breakfall. With every sweep his pants slipped lower and lower
