Learning the nunchaku is just one of the many flexible weapons that a person can master. It can be very practical for self-defense. A purse can become a pair of nunchaku, a belt and even a sash. Of course fighting with these clothing accessories will take a little adjustment but in the Filipinno martial arts, these are taught in th flexible weapon category.

I have used them for over 30yrs...so I still say it has no practical use...at least not to me.

You may be different...we all are.

I teach Katana, Bo, Jo Sia, Kiri Kabong..and the such..but not Nunchuka.

Like I said though with each instructor it is different..and that is what makes the world go 'round.

Peace,
Tae

I studied with a philopino when I was in School. But thanks. I just find them boring.

I enjoy the other weapons much more..and Like I said for me personally I find them more useful.

I use Cho Bos, and Kamas also.

Don't know why I find the nunchaku's so boring..but I guess to each his own...that is what makes life interseting...Yes?

Peace,
Tae

I've been using Nunchaku for a while now, and if you happen to have them around when you need them, they are very very useful. The intimadation factor is much greater than that of grabbing a bo like stick, and thus gives you a much greater psychological advantage. In addition it is a very versatile weapon, with uses from strikes to defences and chokes, so on. I've read a few of demura's books, and its true. They are very good - especially if you have experience in forms of karate - as he shows the relationship between the empty hand techniques and nunchaku techniques very effectively. However, i've never found a decent website - the closest i've got is Alex Levitas' nunchaku site - but itz in russian and the english section is still to be translated !

We work with nunchaku in my school as part of our kobudo ciric ulum(please excuse my poor spelling). Although they are not my favorite weapon I do get them out from time to time.

Most of our striking moves incorporate an extra swing before recatching after a strike. We call that a deceleration loop.
:idea:So I got this really bright idea.

I go over to the bag and take a shot at it with my nunchaku. And, learned very rapidly what the deceleration loop was all about.

Our nunchaku katas do not include a lot of fancy spinning moves like I have seen in competions on tv. We do very basic strikes without flare. I now see that all that spin does not help regain the control of the nunchaku after it actually hits something solid. The spins just look good.

Many of the moves we do are like those in the Demura book. Some are not.

My sensei does not believe in rolling the nunchaku around your neck or crotch area. He believes in effectibe basic techniques that might be duplicate by another object at hand like the handset on a phone cord or the purse.

My examiner also believes that the nunchaku shouldn't be swung around the neck or crotch.

The main advantage of nunchaku is there reach and power.

Its the same idea about where to hold the nunchaku - do you go for flashiness, or effectiveness?

C ya
