From what I understand(There's myths all over the place about this), the colored belt system didn't exist until the 1930's and was developed by Jigoro Kano(Founder of Kodokan Judo). It was later adopted by most of the other systems out there around the world.

Most systems that use colored belts/sashes start off at white belt and students progress through the colors as they learn the requirements. Black belt usually represents a student that has become proficient in the basics of the system.

In my Wing Chun school (in Brazil), us, the students wear black sashes, independent of their grades. Sifu wears a golden sash. There are no gradings. When one is good enough to go to the next stage, then one will be told by the sifu, who will upgrade his training accordingly. No gradings, no fancy belts, badges etc.

I know that many traditional kung fu schools operate more or less in this way.

P.S. I am not in Brazil anymore, but do train with my sifu whenever I visit.

Traditionally,we (shaolin) do not have belt levels or coloured sashes. We may use a different coloured sashes ocasionally used for different uniforms(occasions). There is that saying "Rank follows the man" -not "Man runs after rank"

In Most Traditional Chinese Schools don't use any color sash as a form of rank, but it depends on the school.Case- in-point I went to a wing Chun school which used no sash at all. Then many years later after I left that school now uses many different color sashes.

Sad thing is a lot of times you will see the addition of belts/sashes as a means to collect fees and make more money off students for "testing fees"
