i'd go for goju ryu. judo is more sport oriented and aikido will take years of training before you will be able to use it effectively. shotokan like you said is similar to TKD which you already have a Black Belt in, so i'd go for goju. it just seems like an overall good style.

I would not rule out Judo just because it may be sport-oriented. Even if it is, the training will be at realistic speeds, with resisting opponents, which is what you will encounter on the streets.

In the end, the effectiveness of the self-defense that you learn in any style will be limited by how the instructor teaches. Not so much the style itself.

Hello, Many of the kids in our Judo classes are members of the High School team....so they were taught the sport side.

But not ever class was the same... there were times when the Sensi taught us the street side of JUDO....or he call it the dirty side of JUDO...mean stuff here.....That is why alot people say...Judo is more than you think it is....until you take Judo from the traditional ways....the more you will understand this.........Aloha

I'd go with Judo or Shotokan (mainly because I am not too familiar with gojuryu...). Mind you: A GOOD shotokan school...so I would say that Judo would be your safest bet. One of the best grappling systems (as far as stand up goes) with some sweet throws, it's come in handy if you want to put someone on the ground (other than yourself) fast.

yep, I have done Kodokan for 6 years now and it has saved me in lots of situations.. very good self-defense, even the "sport" judo could be used in self defense, besides, its pretty much the same. but I have heard Goju Ryu can get pretty rough style as well, I think they have a lot of conditioning in it?

If 'taught properly', then any one of them.

goju is alittle more hardcore and direct. and i would also like to comment that most people think goju or shorin or whathave you have no grappling and that is a huge misconception. alot of the applicatations you learn from your kata will end with you on top of your opponent on the ground, maybe not submiting but you genarally use alot of joint manipulation in striking arts.

You will probably pick up useful things from any of those. However if your goal is purely self defense you may want to look into some more specialized training in this area.
