Depends on the school. I was sparring(poorly) about a week or two after I started. _________________ There's no place like 127.0.0.1 |

I have seen some that don't spar until they get their second or third belt. I have also seen those like lordtariel describes. It is usually up to the descretion of the instructor. _________________ Success is where preparation meets opportunity.

At our club, you start by doing 1-for-1 where you take it in turns to use a technique. After a while you then can do semi-free where you take turns doing combos. I don't think we allow full free-sparring until about the 3rd or 4th belt. But that's up to the instructor to decide when a student is capable. Sometimes as a teaching point, higher grades free spar beginners but they are expected to take it down a level and allow the beginner to get a few shots in tp build up confidence. _________________ "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius |

At our school kids start sparring after 4-6 months, adults sooner if they choose. _________________ "Why do people think success is how high and fast you reach the top? Isn't it really how high and fast you bounce back when you hit the bottom?" |

In my Muay Thai class, we sparred lightly starting the second week. After about 6 weeks we went for our first full-contact matches of 2 minute rounds that don't stop unless there's a knockout or someone gives up. Knowing you're going to spar like that focuses you on paying attention in class as it draws closer. _________________ Only as good as I make myself be, only as bad as I let myself be.

My school does light sparring after about 6 weeks. At 9th kyu & above it is once a week. _________________ If you think only of hitting, springing, striking or touching the enemy, you will not be able actually to cut him. You must thoroughly research this. - Musashi |

| After our first test from white belt to gold bar, we are allowed to spar. From there, sparring is a requirement to test for your next belt (yellow). |
