| Hi, I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I took karate a couple years ago in college, and in one of the training sessions, our instructor had us lie down and he walked on our stomachs. Has anyone else experienced this type of training in their martial arts class? If so, do you know what purpose it serves? I thought it was to condition our stomachs and truly I don't think it is a bad exercise if the instructor is careful. One thing I will mention is that it seems like female instructors would be more effective in this type of training because they tend to be lighter and are less likely to cause injury. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks. |

My old instructor did something similar,
He never did it to women though which suprised me.

I have heard of the walking on stomachs thing, and it was done to my instructor, but he doesn't do it to us. As for the punching the stomach...yeah, I know that one. Guys and girls at our dojo get it. | I'm not really sure but if I remember correctly at the time all the females tended to be around the age of 16 and under, maybe that was why? |

That would make more sense. Age tends to play a bigger part in stuff like that, I think. its supposed to make you ab muscles hard, i think when the teacher is about to step on you, you begin to tense hard so thatpractice tensing it at the right moment...
i would disagree on the female thing, if you have a heavy man step on you then mabye it will make it harder, although im not sure if itsthe same as body building, but your ab muscles do contract... _________________ A drop of sweat spent in practice is a drop of blood saved in a battle.

It's pretty typical ab conditioning really. Had it done and done it plenty of times with leg lifts. A tough varient has one foot on the abs, one on about mid thigh of the raised legs. Pretty much the same as using weighted lifts to build up your arms. It's a resistance drill that doesn't endanger your back. _________________ "No one ever drowned in sweat"-Marine maxum |

They all sound like some great supplemental exercises to do for the abs. The medicine ball and the stepping are good for simulating the act of getting hit. _________________ Success is where preparation meets opportunity.
