right on insanity, style is important, veryimportant. i would also pick the kung fu guy were he to fight a tkd guy, well, most styles of kung fu anyways. i wasnt trying to set tkd as the greatest martial art, that belongs to taichiquan, but i was trying to let people know that tkd is not the worst

Unless you're Speedy Gonzales with your feet, high kicks aren't very effective in a street fight. For one thing, they direct your power and strength upwards and at an awkward angle to the body, which lowers your strength. It can still be a nice hard kick, but not as hard as a lower one. Plus, it can knock you off balance, severely.
I still like to use high kicks in sparring, though, because it challenges me to overcome those problems with high kicking. It's a good way to develop balance, flexibility, aim/accuracy, control, and power while kicking high. A great training tool, which will make your waist-level kicks on the street flawless. High kicks have a further distance to travel, and if your opponent has their wits about them, they could grab your foot, putting you in a nasty position to bonk your head rather forcefully on the pavement.

As I see it kicks can be divided in this way.....
1. Flashy kicks (high kicks, spinning-kicks, jumping-kicks) ... the purpose of keeping your body in shape execution is impressive and takes a lot of discipline and training to accomplish.
2. Competition kicks .... used to score points in tournaments, either full- or light-contact. Kicks to the head will be awarded higher points than punches in certain TKD tournaments.
3. Self-defense kicks .... which are strictly used for "fighting defense".....

Remember that high kicks can improve your low kicks.
As monkeygirl posted... you can kick with balance and power at head level or higher even, every low kick you throw will be that more effective.

High Kicking is bad period. So if your style utilizes high kicks you're in trouble. TKD uses a lot of high kicks so it leaves itself so open. My Uncle was in S. Korea while training Marine Corps in hand to hand combat during the 60s and 70s, he would try out the ROK TKD practioners and pretty much wipe the floor with them because they kept on attempting these high kicks.

This is pretty stupid argument. It always depends on the person.Ihave taken on many kf students and * their tail.Yet, im sure certain kf students could do the same to me.The circle goes on and on. AS far as high kicks, I have used them a many times ,they can be used if you know how to use them. Evidently these guys in s. Korea didnt. They got to be set up. You got to know when to use them. Well this is my two cents worth.
