As far as I know TSD has some throws. TSD is a striking art for the most part so obviously there will be more of that. Are you looking for a system that focuses more on throws? _________________ Martial arts training is 30% classroom training, 70% solo training.

TSD does have lock's, throws, etc... However it really does depend on your instructor and association... After all it's all in the forms _________________ Tang Soo Do: 3rd Dan '18

You can always see if the instructor has some experience with throwing, and if he teaches any of the basics. There may be some in there, and you should be able to break some things down in some applications to see where some simple throws can be set up. _________________ www.haysgym.com

This exactly, within my organization there are about 6 throws that are taught. However one of my instructors when I was coming up brought in about 10 more that we learned and the other schools did not. I think TSD is a very well rounded art I feel like I have training in all areas. We did hand and foot strikes, throws, grappling, locks both doing and escaping, blocks, and much more.
Very good art IMHO. _________________ Black belt AFAF # 178

Tang Soo Do DOES have throws. It is often said that the throws in Tang Soo Do look like judo. We know that many martial arts influence others, but Tang Soo Do definitely uses hip tosses, and sweeps. _________________ Hustle and hard work are a substitute for talent! |

Tang Soo Do, generally speaking, does have throws and quiet a few sweeps.
As mentioned earlier, it all depends on what school or organization you're apart of. I know in the ITF, Red Belt Ho Sin Sul and Il Soo Sik Dae Ryun has a few sweeps. Black Belt has both sweeps and throws depending on the level of self defense you're up to.
In the ITF, self defense routines can change. Forms however will never change. That being said. I've seen color belt Ho Sin Sul change once in the last 10 years.
I believe the ITF doesn't teach throws early on because it's very easy to hurt your partner while training, only Dan members train in these techniques.
Gichin Funakoshi himself even refrained from teaching some of the more deadly abilities such as throwing to his students for this very reason. |
