I'm a Kukki-Taekwondo guys in the Los Angeles area. There are MANY near me. The closest school to me is about a mile up the road in one direction & 2 miles in another. (Although the school 2 miles from me is new since I closed my school in July.

I've had several friends who own schools in other towns, but I've never met any of the school owners in my town. Basically, I haven't met them because I hadn't had a reason to meet them. They were not any any of the tournaments that I'd been to.

For my current dojo (Goju-Ryu) we have one that is like a 5 minute walk from us that is also a Goju-Ryu school.

The "rival" club is an IGK (International Goju-Ryu Karate) Dojo and mine is not affiliated with them.
My old club used to be affiliated with the IGK.

Curiously, there are no karate dojo anywhere around offering the same system or a similar one despite being located in an area with a high density of martial arts representation. Shorin ryu in all its variations is probably the largest in Okinawa and has quite a large presence in several countries, too.

And this is exactly why, or one of the reasons anyway, I love Shorin Ryu so much! It's not on every street corner, and isn't normally as commercialized as a lot of systems are. And it's real!

The thing is, as I have learned in teaching... The style is not even close to the only thing that represents the atmosphere of a martial arts studio. It's a fair statement because I made the thread, and it was about styles. With more thought I have realized that even though another school may be near me with a similar style, I havnt seen any that are run like mine, or look like mine, or feel like mine. Mine is unique, as is theirs, and the similar style doesn't make the two schools the same. Many Korean martial arts are very commercialized and leave much to be desired for self defense, with more emphasis on sport-like martial arts then I care for, but that's not me. I habitually break things down for actual use, so it's hard to judge a style by its cover, if you will!
