At our school, we study the ITF "chon ji" forms. On my own, I read about the other set of forms, the WTF forms, and I have learned a few from friends. I love learning new patterns.

I don't know what style they use in my taekwondo studio for forms, but it includes Pinan 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, Fighting Forms 1 and 2 and Naehanji's, which are done in horse stances. Um... I've never been to a tournament before.

TekkenChaos

Correct me if I'm wrong, but those katas you mentioned are Okinawan Katas

Bill, is using the Pinan katas in TKD common? I dont know, me just being a karate + kobudo man

The Korean Pyong Ahn, Okinawan Pinan, and Japanese Heian, are all basically the same animal. Many forms from Korea, Okinawa, and Japan all have their roots in the same Chinese forms.

But surely if you practice TKD, you should call them Pyng Ahn, not Pinan.

Changing topic slightly, I was looking through one of Funakoshi's earlier books, and they had Binan katas. Interesting.....
