don't know if this is still done, but a few years ago it was popular to abuse the black belt until it looked old, I always thought it was funny when a 18 yr. old black belt was walking around with a belt so worn, torn and faded it looked older than they were!!!

karateka is simply a practitioner of karate. The belt wears and fades after many years of training.
