Why yes, me and a friend do sparring as practice, and hit the bags and practice self-defence moves together. He trains himself in anything and I do Tae kwon Do so we learn off of each other. Basically, consider it a way to spend the afternoon with someone else to both have fun and to learn. Me and a friend just spar for a while to try techniques and patterns and set goals just like Ken said. We find application for different moves and good counters etc.

Its good practice, good news to me that someone is starting doing this

We do alot of back yardtraining. Actually our dojo pretty much is in the backyard. We train underground out of the public eye. I train old school kajukenbo style so anything pretty much goes when we spar. We train for realism so contact is a must. sometimes we wont wear pads unless you want to. Our instructor is always there making sure everything was cool. It is not unusual for there to be blood after our sparring sessions.

Had a night of sparring for the first time tonight at Muay Thai, now Ive got a good idea of what gear I need. I cant imagine why anyone wants to roll bottles on their shins when all they need is light sparring, block a few kicks and you can feel it alright! So shin pads are close to the top of the list with gloves. There was a tall guy who liked to kick, some frount kicks were getting a bit low, he didnt keep his guard up very well Ill try to punch him next time. I got a few hits on my nose from the more experianced guys, I think they were going easy as well!!
I think with some practice Ill be pretty damn good!! Thank for the advice guys

the reason why backyard sparring isnt gonna be that great of an idea is cuz there probobly wont be a person there (eg. a sensei or instructor) to point out mistakes and cool down the situation when people start hitting eachother really hard and stop the session before somebody gets hurt

thats all!
