so there i was in the book store picking up a book about zen and martial arts and i decided that i was going to get the famous "Five Rings" book, but to my suprise there was like 5 or 6 different books that were all about the same thing. so there was an original book, but i guess the translations and understanding of what meant what is a little different from author to author.

WHICH BOOK IS THE BEST?
WHICH AUTHOR SHOULD I CHOOSE?

please help

John,

It really depends on your interests. Some translations are mediocre, some are topic oriented (Five Rings as applied to business), and others are the result of doctoral dissertations.

Assuming you're looking for a nice English translation that is not loaded with tons of 'translator' insight, i recommend Victor Harris' version.

I've heard praise on Hidy Ochiai's version, but have not read it myself. It contains about 80 extra pages worth of Ochiai's insight.

As to the ones that are 'topic oriented,' steer clear. Most of them are merely piggybacking on the fame of Miyamoto's work, with their own substandard career counseling.

I agree with White Warlock. The Victor Harris version is great, and it looks good too.

I own that one. Still, I really want to read the real one my Musashi.
P.S. I know this post is kind of old, I just found it.
