when watching any bruce lee film I have notice that bruce lee always has his eyes closed especially when doing hand techniques,
maybe when one is at the cinema one doesn't notice but once DVDs were invented, one can go in slowmotion and freeze the action to study the technique.
many times one can see lee has his eyes closed.
anybody else notice this and is there an explanation?

Yes! I too have noticed that as well. As far as an explanation, I've only assumptions, but no hard facts to rely upon. Sorry.

I do the very same thing, but I can only surmise that I...well...blink from time to time. My Uncle Wayne would hold his eyes closed for a very long time whenever he was making a strong point; a prolonged blink.

Funny how we see quite a lot of things whenever we put the DVD in slow motion. First time I saw Bruce do that, it was during Enter the Dragon. The scene was when Bruce was working out in this room, and O'Hara had opened the door to Bruce's room to speak a directive order to Bruce, and Bruce tells O'Hara..."Outside!!" Once the door was closed, Bruce exploded with a series of quick punches and his trademarked kiai. Slow those punches down, that's where I first saw Bruce closing his eyes.

thank you for that. Having opened this thread I now have to watch all the BL eyes closed in all the films! this is a hugh task of research. I watch enter the dragon first and take a snap shot when I find one.

I have 2 theories...
Bruce Lee transferred the speed from his blinks to his hands and feet.

Or...
he moved so fast he blinks look longer than normal through the time paradox.

Bruce Lee wore prescription glasses for reading also in his sunglasses.

Squinting can help shape the eyes to focus better.

For this reason it is easy to see why he closed his eyes, also the propreceptive skills from Wing Chun uses touch and sensitivity, to feel the opponent's intentions better.

Bruce Lee not only closed his eyes but he also stopped motionless for an instant, to strike the opponent quicker than they could move away; similar to firing a bullet from a rifle, staying motionless then releasing the bullet to the target in an instant.

may be he was afraid of being poked in the eye with a counter from the opponent.

I came up with a third theory.

His eyes weren't closed.
His blinks were so fast that the camera technology at the time could not keep up.
