There isn't a study that shows that weight training stunts growth. Progressive training improves bone growth and adds muscle, rather than hindering growth.A training program for teens should include more than just weight lifting. Weight together with a fun type of exercise even sports count!.... about 20 minutes of exercise and 15 minutes of weight training.
I am a mom of a 16 yr old son....and around 13-15 he was a "chunky monkey" ...but I think that has alot to do with hormones. He has been lifting since 15 and is getting slimmer with more definition. I hafta keep getting him off the computer and playstation...I think that is the downfall of all teenage boys physiques!!

Sorry if I cause offence here, but I personally dislike how everyone here is referring to people my age as 'kids' that need 'fun games' for exercise. I am willing to buckle down to some exercise. I would rather go on a rowing machine than play football, I would rather go on an exercise bike than play squash, the same as most people dedicated to fitness and the martial arts at my age. Agree with me here Moobrack

I actually do think there was a study done that dictated that doing weights from an age under 15/16 can have detrimental effects on the body. We're pretty much all we're gonna b at age 16, but pushups and stuff are goods. If you're gonna do weights anyway i don't think it would be wise to spend 2 hours doing them. Just 15 minutes of toning and stuff.

There was a boy interviewed on kickboxing.com or something. he was described as 'Little Hercules' and he is pound for pound the strongest person in the world. His parents put this talented kid on a weights and martial arts routine and he has personal trainers and all that crap. I', afraid of what's gonna happen while this little dude is growing, i don't reckon he'l grow all that well and there might b detrimental effects.

I don't spose i should talk - i was doing mountain climbing martial arts spiritual stuff with my brother when i was 12/13. It was great - but i'm kinda contradicting myself by doing onew thing and saying another.

Ah well, sorry.
Angus
