I gather that you're not currently involved in any martial arts at the moment...correct?
How do you get promoted? The same as in school...you test. If you pass, you get promoted. Fail, and you don't. |

Do you have to do moves on someone?
How often can you test? _________________ Learner GoGoGo |

Testing varies a lot from school to school, system to system. There are no set regulations governing how often yo ucan test, nor what yo udo for a test.
As for putting "moves" on someone...you do that regularily in the class.
My advice would be to go to a local martial arts school and watch a class or two. Talk to the ihnstructor if you can, and several of the students. Going to different schools should give you an idea of how they differ in their approach to instruction and may answer many of your questions. |

Degrees work on a thermometer
Some places can have you up there in short time with much money.
Seriously, why be concerned with a degree, when you had not even started a study, or have you?
Typical of a beginner seeking out the "material" aspect of martial arts first. No offense. Common human behavior and train of thought.
You should be asking, "How long does a 1st Dan, take in "your" (each poster) style? |

How about answering the guy's question.
In many martial arts schools you are evaluated for rank (degree). You may then be recommended for a test by the instructor. You get recommended by demonstrating your knowledge and proficiency of the required material for that particular belt in class. When you actually test you are more formally evaluated on your material under a variety of conditions. If you pass you are promoted to the next level. Most schools have a test fee ranging from reasonable to ridiculous, hence 47MM's comment about financial gain.
Once you join a school or find a place to train you will quickly see how this all works. Like Shorinryu Sensei recommends visit a few places to watch how classes are conducted and don't be afraid to ask questions. Good luck. _________________ I had to lose my mind to come to my senses. |

Sorry all,
Red J is correct.
The time it takes is as the many diferrences per MA. There is no "complete" standard of time.
However, I am curious to know, what others think that a "average" time should be to make it to 1st Dan? |

I've personally seen as little as one year (with no prior experience)...and heard of systems where a mandatory 10 years was required. I'd say the norm is 2 1/2 to 3 years. It took me 3 1/2 years..and I was a fanatic about training during that period. |
