Moobrack, most of the styles i have trained in DO have a self-defense initiative and a syllabus set aside within the course specifically for the self-defense side of things.

Kumite helps out for fighting because it helps you in control and discipline. It helps you get into a situation where your heart is racing and endorphines are rushing, yet you are in complete mental and physical control. It helps you counter someone surprising you on the street. The thing I like about Kumite is that, anyone can just punch someone as hard as they can. It takes real discipline not to hit them and have the control of mind, body and spirit.

It really isn't that hard if you have the right teacher and you are doing the right things. If you work at it as a sport, you will find it benefits you physically a lot more. The one thing that must come with Kumite is KATA. Kata gives you the balance to move around. If you suck at balance, you will basically fall around the mats. You must have a rhythm, you must have speed distance and timing, and above all, YOU MUST HAVE FUN! IF IT AIN'T FUN, YOU ARE NOT DOING IT RIGHT!

Yeah, it was one of the reasons I first joined. What is even better is that my Sensei is a Kumite person. He loves it and I love it. As I got into Karate a little more, I gradually also got a love for Kata. That is what I like about Karate, something can always catch your interest. So to answer your question, yes.
