“The Wheeled Warriors group and the Ultimate Cage Fighting Championships have joined forces to put on a series of bouts with fighters in wheelchairs and also amputees under MMA rules. It will take place later this year in South Yorkshire,” Fighters Only was informed today. |
Seems a little bizarre to me. I think it'd be better without the wheelchairs otherwise things like groundwork become pretty useless and it'll just be like a wheelchair boxing match. _________________ "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius |

I'd think that the people who are in wheelchairs think it's pretty awesome. They tend to like handcycle races and the like, too, for a similar reason - "Part of my body doesn't work, bah.. but hey, here's a sport I can do and train/compete with the other people I know who are dealing with the same issue!" _________________ "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Baleia |

I do think it's a great idea but just am failing to see how it's any different from wheelchair boxing. Would also be interesting to see if they'll have classification groups like the paralympics has?
I do remember seeing something a while back about a para- (maybe quad-)plegic MMA fighter who wasn't using a wheelchair and that was awesome. _________________ "Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it." ~ Confucius |

It wouldnt surprise me to find that they have a whole library of 'standup' grappling techniques they use, that wouldn't allowed in a boxing match. _________________ "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Baleia |

No legs means a lot less punching power. Kinetic linking will be less effective. I would be more sad than entertained, I think...

They have a chair, and they may well have some interesting applications of it. In any case, I doubt they are at all worried about what people with four working limbs think. _________________ "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - Baleia |
