i was told that if it is obvious to you that the aggressor is going to fight no matter what,
you are best to loudly state that they you are trained to defend yourself
(choose your wording, it doesn't matter how you say it)
for the benefit of any witnesses.

actually he said that
i) shout so that people can hear you,
something that will draw their attention to what is going on.
ii) shout something that makes people aware that you are likely to be attacked
iii) shout so that people can hear,
that you are trained in whatever martial art (see above).
ii) best to do iii) more than once so that the aggressor can in no way say that he wasn't warned.

note that the shouting isn't to act as a warning but rather to protect your own behind with respects to the law.

Depends on the situation, and how you read your opponent. If you can articulate to a jury why you were reasonably sure you were about to be attacked, you might be better off to launch a preemptive strike with no warning.

If he is clearly attacking you, I'd say shout "NO!" instead of 'kia' as you counter attack.

Sometimes, stating that you are a trained martial artist can be found to be antagonizing, or even threatening. Remember too, witness see your actions and words through their own filter, especially when witnessing a dangerouse and emotional, violent confrontation. At the least, you've alerted your opponent that you have skills, so he should be warry when he attacks.

It's a judgement call on your part, but I would go in with an awareness of principles rather than a set response. This is why running conflict scenarios can be as important as learning to fight. The fight starts when one or more people decide to confront the/each other, and ends when a verdict is handed down in court- both criminal and civil. Everything you do from start to end will determine not only the outcome of the physical encounter, but the outcome of the entire conflict.

that reminded me, here in madison they say you should yell "fire", since more people will probably come around, seeing as
A) they think they may be in danger too and
B) people love watching things burn... i guess. y'know, you always get a crowd of gawkers.

anyway, "fire" is supposed to draw a crowd and give you an out. just a thought.

well, like i kinda said, the above was told to me if it looks like there's nothing else i can do to de-escalate the situation.

the initial shouting is to attempt to bring attention to the situation as well as bring the aggressor back into reality, as it were, making him that little bit more aware of people, things around him.

you might be better off to launch a pre-emptive strike with no warning

well this is where it gets a bit sneaky.
i was also told that i can still make the pre-emptive attack,
just as long as i've 'protected' myself somewhat by the shouting.

i should point out that this was told to me by someone who works london doors.
he in turn was told by a met police officer who has a special interest in that aspect of martial arts and the law.

not claiming that it is the thing to do.
just throwing up some more useless junk to eat up server space...

DM, just another opinion on how to aproach it. Your suggestions have merrit, and would be a good place to start. My point is that as martial artists, we should take our training a little farther in this area- especially those of us practicing for self defense.

batt, I've heard that about yelling 'fire!' to get attention. It is usually advised in rape prevention courses, because most people in larger cities would rather not get involved in helping stop a rape. Might be ok if you are attacked in a secluded area, but in the open where they can see what is going on, you might be seen as an idiot. Or, they may think he's pounding you for being a prankster.

I was told to shout "fire" on a self defence course that they ran for the students when I was in school. According to the instructor (who was also a full-time JJ instructor), shouting "fire" is more effective than shouting "help".

I know what you mean! The bad news is, it doesn't get any better. I'm a long ways from being a kid, but now they think I'm a dirty old man!
