The time someone spend training is a key factor as baby stated. I spent years traning 5-6 times a week for at least 3 hours per day (golden years for me).

The black belt shouldn't be seen as an ends...

A martial artist considers his art his "way of life", and the black belt only signifies the beginning of that journey.

In my dojo, it is minimum 3 years. A lot of people wait longer. It is not how long it takes you to get a black, it is if you can back it up.

Thanks guys, that's great. I know that black belts are overated in the west, where people think they make you a grand master, while in the east it is considered that the black belt merely marks when you can start to understand the art.

It takes about 5 - 6 years to reach the black belt level at my school, provided you pass the exam...then it could take longer.

Last week I sparred with a man who had just received his black belt in another style. I asked him how long he had been studying. He replied with "a year and a half".

His performance proved it for sure

It's interesting how the west has created two images of a blackbelt in such a contrasting manner. On one hand there is the all powerful godlike image that hollywood potrays and on the other hand there are the pussies coming out of McDojos.

Hi all.
Each school or dojo have diferents rules for granding, special in black belts.
As I can read in the post some said 3 years others 8...
My question is:
how many days a week?
3 years (one day a week)? = 124 trainig days
1 year (6 days a week)? =288 traing days.
Can you see the diference?
In my dojo to be a black belt you need 700 trainig days. +- 8 years.
Osu.

I take goju ryu which is very hard to master it may take 8 years to get a black belt. I'm up for the challenge though only five belts left!
