I just got back from a week of teaching and training with the Special Forces here (SAS). I was asked by my Sensei to assist.

What a pile of paper work he had to through. Since 11-9 things have tightened up and before we could go they did back ground checks etc. They have never don this before.

Anyway it was a great week being with the elite of the Army and these are true warriors. Many of course I had never met before and of course they viewed us as civilians until they experienced the extent of our knowledge in unarmed combat.

These guys are incredibly fit, strong and tough and several tried us on, especially my Sensei (9th Dan). He may be 61 but he soon put these younger whipper snappers in their place.

We trained them in many aspects. But when it came to learning some Kata they were somewhat negative about its effectiveness until the movements were broken down and applied in actual combat. After this their attitudes changed.

I also enjoyed being allowed to go through their obstacle courses. I think that is excellent training and if any have access to this, I would highly recommend it.

I also noticed out of training these guys are somewhat quiet and reserved. Interesting.

I will come back to this later and tell you more about what happened, it was quiet funny sometimes. Gotta get to work now...

Just out of curiosity, what sort of things were you showing them?

I'm not being funny but i could understand them being Negative to Kata, i would have thought they would want something like JKD or Krav Maga. something quick, simple to learn and effective.

I'm really not being funny or questioning the importance of kata, just really interested in what aspects you teach them? Pressure points?

Ah the obstacle course. It has been many years since I last ran the one at Ft Jackson. I am sure there have been changes in the last 25+ years though.

I am not surprised about the kata aspect...I'm glad that you got them to realize the importance of patterns in martial arts training.

Sounds liek you had an awesome week! I wish I could get the hech outta my boring town fotr a while .
