| One of my friends told me once, that if you ever get into a fight on the street, and you happen to have a lighter on you, you should have it in your hand when you make a fist because it fills up some of the empty space in your fist and gives you a more solid punch, has anyone else heard of this? |

Yes, ive heard similar things, not sure how true it is and never tried it myself. Personally, punching would be one of the last things i would do in a self defense situation anyway. |

It will make the fist more dense. Yes, that's true. A lighter is probably not your best bet though.

Wouldn't a hard punch with a lighter in your hands actually break the lighter, or deform it badly? With plastic one then you'd run the risk of cutting your hands on the next punch.

| Not to mention, unless you are engaging in street fights, then its highly unlikely you will have the awareness or preparation to pull out your lighter and wrap it nicely in your hand. |

I think that the pressure would be spread out enough that it wouldn't, but I can't be for sure. Also, the way it is situated may have some effects on the result, as well.

| I wouldn't think it would make much difference if you throw your punches properly. A proper Karate punch is thrown so that you make contact with the first two large knuckles, which transfers the shock up the 2nd and 3rd metacarpal bones and up the forearm. If your alignment is correct it should be a pretty devastating strike in any case. Besides, what happens to the lighter if you open your hand for a palm strike or knife hand, for example? Also, what if you need to do a takedown or submission hold? Pretty hard to do while clenching a lighter in your hand. |
