What is some good advice for starting Jeet Kune Do?
I want to start training in it for mostly discipline but also for self-defense.

Find a qualified JKD instructor!

Not just an instructor that thinks he/she can teach JKD because they've read and studied every JKD book. Finding a qualified JKD instructor should be easy, but, I'd still caution you because while a JKD instructor might be certified, is the certification from a reputable organization. Contact Dan Inosanto or Tim Tackett or Jerry Poteet for their recommendations for a JKD instructor in your area, if there are any.

There isn't much you can do really without first getting something to practice.

I suggest just looking around youtube for vids there are lots of bad ones but there are some good ones. Anything by Ted Wong, Danny Inosanto, Tim Tackett and of course Bruce Lee what limited footage there is will help you get an idea of what JKD is all about.

The rest my friend is, well up to you to find out.

JKD is a very elusive art. Many people practice a watered down version of the art because they never learned the proper techniques and how to apply it to combat.

If you are looking for a JKD instructor, go for someone that know how to teach trapping in combat. Not just in reference points. Anyone that spent a great amount of time training under Dan Inosanto or Paul Vunak would be very knowledgeable.
