im going to start ju jitsu and am wondering what to look for in a good ju jitsu school

Make sure the instructor is qualified, and make sure to speak with some of his students. Get a good idea of how they feel about their instructor, and method of training. This will give ya good peace of mind before selecting the right school.

im more wondering about thing specific to ju jitsu what he spends time on is there sparing etc.

yes - sparring is vital. No sparring - go somewhere else!
