I was just re reading some of the posts on Kiyas...when it occured to me, how many of you would actually make use of and scream a kiya at the top of youre lungs in a real street fight? I know in tournaments and so on, we all do it...but in the intensity of a real street fight would you?? Obviously the likes of Bruce Lee did ( Okay, well he made some sort of funny noises ) but I dont think I would...

I would usually grunt (as I do for power in some other situations), but if I was delivering the final hit that would knock 'em flat I would scream with all my might to concentrate power.

In self defense applications it isn't neccessariyly the amount of noise being made as it is the forcefull exhalation in the process of executing the technique to strengthen it. Remember one of the things that happens when a kiai is let out is that the muscles tighten - also importand when executing a block.

Conversely a large amount of noise might bring assistance.

A kiai is a very powerful tool if used corectly and it takes years to master the art . agin i say art , it is jsut taht it is not just a yell it is focusing your energy so that it travels through and out of your body.
