Whoa! I'm in love!
I took my first ever kobudo lesson last night and it ROCKED!! I found something that i am absolutely horrible at (weapons) and now i'm learning brand new things. I feel so alive!
The only weapon i used last night was the bo, the one i like the most, and it is pretty good.
I've been practicing the basics i learned last night all day today and i have bruises up and down my arms from where the bo was hitting. Kobudo is awesome!

Finally another has seen the light!!!
When I first started Kobudo, I felt that way too - I was nervous at first, but when I started training it was definately one of the best decisions in my martial arts life.
Angus - do u have an official kobudo teacher with a kobudo rank, or just a black belt teaching. Just wondering....as my senior is someone who is self-taught (but he doesn't teach) , whilst my grader is a 3rd Dan in Kobudo
Another one has been bitten by the Kobudo bug.

What's Kobudo? Is it a sword art? What weapons do they teach?

Well to Tobias first - I study under 7th Dan Master Sal Ebanez (Goju Ryu Karate). I don't know if he holds a kobudo rank or not but he sure can teach it. It's awesome! I just have to remember to keep my hands on the bo when i'm switching then and to bring the bo to my shoulder before i strike.
Ken - i dunno about the swords, but the weapons i saw were the bo and nunchaku.
Man i like being a newbie again!

Ken
Ku= Ancient
Budo= Martial art.
Kududo is for the most part the teaching of the weapons.
Bo
Jo
Sai
Kama
Katana(long Sword)
Nunchukas
In some schools depending on theother weapons that the instructor knows..more weapons are taught.
Some specialize in just one weapon.
You also (agian in some scholls), learn to use the bokken, and shinai...
Peace,
Tae

I can use all of the weapons mentioned skillfully and I've never trained in Kobudo. One you learn a few weapons, there are just small little adjustments that need to be made to use anything as a weapon.

Hey guys,
to my knowledge, the katana is not a kobudo weapon. This is because kobudo was designed by the working classes in okinawan when all weapons (except for the samurais) were banned.
Most of the kobudo weapons were farm tools used by the farmers.
Kama - sickle
tonfa - some sort of handle
nunchaku - horse bite/rice beater
bo - water carrier
sai - some sort of trowel
iyeku - an oar
the above are the main weapons taught by the International Okinawan Kobudo Association
Other kobudo weapons include:
koa - a hoe.
tekko - essentially brass knuckles.
shuchu - a small kubotan-like thing about 5" long.
san-setsu-kon - the 3-section staff.
surujin/suruchen - a weighted chain with a spike or blade on one end -
similar to the Chinese chain whip or the Japanese manrikigusari;
tinbe - actually, this is two weapons...the tinbe itself, which is a small
shield traditionally made of the shell of a sea tortoise, and the rochin, which is a short spear with a cutting blade - the weapon actually resembles a Zulu spear more than anything else.
kusarikama - a kama on the end of a rope or chain.
nunti - a short spear.
The only way in which the original kobudo practitioners would use swords would be when they pilfered one off a japanese samurai.
The martial art of the japanese sword is called Iaido.

There are a few japanese sword arts using the katana. Aikido teaches the katana. Kenjitsu and Kendo are other sword arts. Maybe I should train in Kendo.. since my name is ken?
