I think you should go to a prison and see how many murders were committed for trivial and stupid reasons. See how many of them say "I didnt mean to kill anyone".
Talk to the family of someone who was beaten to death.
Talk to a docter or ambulance driver about how easily a person can die.

Well, what's wrong with running away? You said that your friend saw it coming, why didn't he run? I also think it's * that people that train in martial arts have a different set of laws on self-defense than people that don't train. I've seen too many martial artist that can't fight worth a damn to know that martial artists aren't necessarily "deadlier" than other people. My advice is, if you train in martial arts, don't let the gov't know.

"Talk to the family of someone who was beaten to death. "
Depends on why they were beaten, if it was a criminal trying to kill/beat another person, I would tell that family that thier child was a jerk and reaped his rewards.

Fighting all depends. You have to tell them to go away or stop and then only if they touch you first should you use your martial arts. And only use them to the extent that theyu are needed. In Massachusetts you get 3-5 for involuntary mansluaghter.
