Is the standup grappling in Muay Thai actually grappling or is it more like locking horns??

Angus.

This a bit off topic, but who here thinks we need to add a Muay Thai forum? Is there enough support for it?

(If you'd like to talk about Muay Thai, please post, because I need a few members to support it to start a new one. )

Hi Patrick,

I wouldn't mind keeping Muay Thai within Kickboxing, since it's an extension of Kickboxing.

If the Muay Thai section gets too big, then I'm all for creating a separate forum for Muay Thai, but for now, I recommend keeping it here with Kickboxing.

As for Angus' question, sorry, bud, can't help you there (I'm a Kung Fu dude )

I agree with Ninja Boy. We had alot of questions about Muay Thai on the other board too and the two are so similar anyways...just my thoughts...

Muay Thai is NOT an extension of kickboxing. It is a martial art all of it's own. There are many, many Muay Thai techniques that are not allowed in the ring. To say Muay Thai is merely just kickboxing is not right and it's a little offensive to me.

Ok, now back to the subject. Muay Thai grappling is grappling, but it's done standing up. The goal isn't a throw or a choke/lock, but it is to strike with elbows, knees, kicks and punches (and headbutts in the old days). It can be very technical just like Gracie jujitsu, but isn't seen in the USA as much because Americans tend to think it's boring.

I think that there are very few arts that can match the Clinch grappling of Muay Thai. It's a great skill to learn and takes a some training in sensitivity and technique.

Hey Ken, thanks for the insight. No offence was intended...So what are your thoughts on starting a new board for Muay Thai? I think you'd be a great moderator as well as a valuable source of insight/information on the subject...

my only view on the subject of muay thai vs kickboxing is that muay thai has been around much longer and is a partial foundation of kickboxing.

in my humble opinion with a bow.

I wouldn't mind a Muay Thai forum. And sure, i could be a moderator. Does that mean I'd get to get teh cool black-belt symbol next to my name?

Muay Thai actaully wasn't a foundation for "kickboxing" as it were. Kickboxing was developed by Karateka's in the USA as a full-contact platform, mainly because the point-sparring was getting old. Muay Thai was hardly known back then. The same "kickboxing" format just happened to be developed by the Thai-boxers many years prior. They do have similar rules because both kickboxing and Muay Thai were influenced by queensbury boxing.

And that's about the arts.

Hehhe.. couldn't resist.
