Just wondering if you guys could give my mum some encouragement...shes practicing like mad as she may be taking her black belt next year. My mum has one main aim, to get to her black belt before she is 50 and i really want her to do it! She does struggle sometimes and gets muddled and this frustrates her a lot as she knows she can do it! She used to have a mental block and forget her katas etc when she was put on the spot but shes got over it and even entered her first competition this year just to prove to herself she can do it!! Im really proud

I agree, it takes a lot of nerve to compete. I have seen people crumble when they are asked to do kata in comps.GO JOANNE'S MUM!!!

My own personal goal was to get my Black belt before I turned 40 ... and I did a month before
Go for it Joannes mum ... it certainly is not easy and requires some stringent kata practicing and don't forget to train diligently many weeks before working on cardio endurance, breathing, balance and mental focus .... this will help immensely with your mum's self confidence to go for the ...Black!
Lots of luck to her

Your mother is not alone. I didn't start training until I was like 37. I was over 40 when I got my brown belt.

And you know I do think those of us who are a bit older have more trouble remembering our forms as time goes by. And the further we go the more likely we are to go blank at the wrong time.

It is really scary to find yourself sparring a healthy young person who may be your size but 30 years younger.

I hit thing before I meant to.

Tell your mom she is defintately not alone. It may be a struggle but it is worth it. And at this point much of her battle is mental.

The struggle is making her stronger wether she believes it or not. And just think in a while what the grand kids will think one day. When they see grandma's black belt hanging proudly on the wall. Or better yet worn proudly by grandma.
