I feel you can buy nunchucks and move them, swing them..
I remember i started with Homemade nunchucks.. and Yes, its safer if you buy them. and Yes, get those made with foam. lol
specially if you don't know about the weapon.

I was reading posts and after I went off line your post was the one that stuck in my mind. 
When I first started using nunchaku I was more uncoordinated than most. Hey, I do have multiple sclerosis.
I would make sure I took off my everyday glasses and put on my sport goggles. 
And then, when practicing alone  I would put on my helmet.
