Was Ray Dalke the first American to make a black belt under Gichin Funakoshi? I think he was just checking my info here.

I found this link.

http://math.ucr.edu/~rkc/dalke.html

I don't know if he was the first or not though. Master Ohshima taught the first Karate class in the US in 1956 but I don't know when he promoted the first non-Japanese student to Shodan.

Info about Master Ohshima

I know Dalke is the highest ranked American according to the AJKA. Just figured he was the first. My Sensei Howie Harvey tested under him for his Dan.

Hello Everyone,

Ray Dalke made his Blackbelt under Nishiyama Sensei in California. He also taught Chuck Norris how to incorporate his hands into his Tang Soo Do.

Regards
Mike Mitchell
