I've done rolls in a ton of different ways, including all those shown.

I've never done a somersault in my Judo class. It's always been a forward shoulder roll. This link has a good picture.

If it helps, I flip all over the place and do handstands and the like when I go down, and I would never somersault straight over like that either

We practice rolling very similar to the second roll. One of the requirements for purple belt is to be able to do a roll, pop up and hit or kick a pad (held by the instructor or your partner), then do a back roll away.

It feels very natural for my body to tuck my head roll shoulder to hip. I was up a 6 foot ladder that started falling back from what it was propped against. I lost my balance and fell off. As soon as I hit the ground went into a back roll. I popped up and I was unharmed. It happened without any conscious thought. I'm sure I would have sprained my ankle badly had I not rolled.

I have always done variations of the second version, along with break falls, which do make noise.

Sorry for calling it a "Judo Roll" could not think of anything better to call it. (except a somersault of course) I know a few guys who can pull off the first roll a bit better than a somersault, but this was the best video I could find.

Calling it what you did is good enough to get your point across; it's all good!

Judo ukemi is not for stealth, it is soley to prevent damage and absorb shock. the slapping of your arms and feet are necessary.

what he is demonstrating is great for stealth but not for the person taking a throw.

I've never been completely clear to me why a breakfall should "need" a burst of peak impulse impact force delivered in a way that captures and exaggerates a displacement of air, myself.

The slap, whether the hands or feet are absorbing the impact. It gives the energy somewhere to terminate. I have felt what as break fall feels like when it's not done properly.

Like your whole body is a solar plexus that got hit. Judoka and aikidoka are experts At falling.
