I just heard a story from my friend at school today. His father, who is a very experienced martial artist, was mugged by several people at once one time (my friend says he was there when it happened) and one of them tried to come at his father with a pipe, and his father boke the man's jaw with a roundhouse kick.

Check you tube out. From spinning hook kicks in TKD to muay thai kicks, to the UFC and pride. Many people got KO'ed with a head kick.

Works great when the kick is set up with your punches.

Yeh, the low roundhouse is a very effective technique- the high one I'd stay away from on the street because he could very well catch it.

What about the legal ramifications of using kicks in a fight? Somebody told me a long time ago that punching someone is assault, but kicking them is assault with a deadly weapon. Of course, this could just be myth. Can anybody clarify this?

Self defense laws generally don't go into specifics about punching and kicking. The detemination on if you are committing assault is usually made based upon several factors including but not limited to:

1) could you have removed yourself from the situation without fighting.

2) was there a clear and present danger to you or others

3) what level of force did you use to respond to the assault. And once a subject is neutralized (as to their threat potential), do you continue to fight.

I have researched the self defense laws in every place I have lived, and or teach. I add this information in my training on self-defense.

well the roundhouse kick can be powerful if utilized correctly, its not always about speed and stregth. But its more of like a tai chi thing as to how much power is behind it. Bruce lee is a perfect example. he knew how to utilize spower as appose to strength

Only if you contact a hard area, like the shin bones of an opponent, and if you haven't been conditioned. Striking the side of the leg is not a hard target, so it won't cause you any pain, really.

I doubt that. On account of I've seen people kick through three baseball bats at one time. I don't think there are any places in the body that are usually three times as hard as a baseball bat.

Nope. Unless you kick some hard, protruding bone like the elbow or perhaps the ankle, or their shin. When you're conditioned, you can deal with that to some degree too. It's a very common method in Muay Thai and Kyokushin, probably lots of others too. In our shootfighting system we round-kick this way.
