I have been finding sites that will not sell Sai to NYers. I cannot find any legislation that says that Sai are illegal. All I hear that are illegal are nunchuku. Can someone point me in the right direction. I have a pair of sai already... are they illegal?

I would look under the state section of law that deals with knives or daggers. I think they consider it a dagger of sorts. That is why it would be illegal. That would be where I would start.

...or walk down the street flipping them and wait for the police to find you.

Since the sai aren't "bladed" or sharp like a knife/sword/dagger are, I don't see any reason that they would be classified the same...but then again, NY'ers think a bit differently than I do....THANK GOD!

I've never been above the Mason-Dixon Line inside the states, however, here in Oklahoma the law is, you can carry a weapon (not a gun) to or from a competition and/or training. You can not carry a weapon with intend to harm someone or for self-defense.
in other words, if you get stopped and you have an escrima in your car, just say you are on your way to practice, then so you're not lying, go somewhere and practice hitting with an escrima!

I may be mistaken but, I am pretty sure that you can buy, own, and sell them and even carry them to and from training or competition but not down the street. Good Luck with your hunt.

NY typically would call a pencil a weapon in the hands of a martial artist.

Sai are, as someone else pointed out, considered a type of knife/dagger and as such are limited to a three inch blade to be legal. the cross guard thing is a defining point of distinction between a utility tool and a weapon. In Florida several wah lummers who worked as surveyors were charged with weapons possession when seen with things called 'choppers' hanging from thier belts. these things are essentially swords without crossguards. the surveyors were using them as machettes. the court dismissed them as the tools did not have crossguards and as such were not intended for lethal combat.

Try emailing or phoning the sites that won't sell Sai and ask them why not - If they won't sell them to NYers then they must believe they have a good reason for it - no store/shop would want to exclude potential paying customers if they can help it.

Well, since there is a spiritual aspect in Martial Arts you could say that taking them away from you would be religous persecution and then sue them for millions! Mwahahaha!
