I saw a picture of some sais from the Edo Period the other day and I noticed that they were quite different from mine. The middle part was a blade, not a metal bar like in the ones sold today. Were all sais like that back then, and if so, why was the design changed?

Over time there have been many different designs of sai all over the Pacific Rim. Sai are not unique to Okinawa and Japan.
