What is it? i.e. How is it different from other styles of karate? I can't find info on it because it isn't one of the major karate styles.
I do shorin-ryu karate with influences from white-crane kung fu. |

These web sites look like they could be useful....
http://www.okinawan-shorinryu.com/
http://www.shorin-ryu.net/general.html
http://champloo.com/okinawa/information/karate.htm
I also believe that shorin ryu was a direct decendant from shuri te (te meaning hand and shuri being the village in okinawa where it descended from.) where as goju descended from Naha-te, the developement of shorin ryu led to the creation of Wado ryu and skotokan. the combination of goju and shorin ryu led to the creation of chito ryu.
hope that helps _________________ Goju Ryu Karate-do and Okinawan Kobudo, 17 Years Old 1st kyu Brown Belt in in Goju Ryu Karate-do, & Shodan in Okinawan Kobudo

I have trained in shotokan, matsubayshi shorin ryu, and hayashi ha shi-to ryu. The main difference in shrorin ryu was that the stance were higher. And being an okinawan style some of the terms have a different name than the same thing in a "Japanese" style. Remember at one time Okinawa was a seperate country from Japan; and the language had differences.

Is a pretty good site. There are nice links to video clips of all the katas. They take a while to download but are of a very high quality. |

Shorin Ryu = Shuri-Te + Tomari-Te
Shorin-ryu is basically what Funakoshi was taught.
Shotokan is what Funakoshi taught in Japan. |

RF_Brown, actually, Shorin-Ryu isn't one of the official major styles of karate. But it's common anyways. There's four: Wado-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, Goju-Ryu and Shotokan.
Thanks for all your help! _________________ *-----*-----*

I guess that it depends on how well educated you are as to whether or not you would consider the parent system of all styles of karate major or not. Shorin ryu was around long before Goju ryu, Wado ryu, Shotokan or any other style of karate. The reason that shorin ryu would not be considered a major style is that the Okinawan people have not sold themselves ot the world like the main Japanese Islands. Even though I study Goju ryu and it would be considered a "major" style since it is recognized by the Olympics it is still a more closely guarded secret in the Okinawan version than the Other versions of the same style. Now as for Shorin ryu it was the style created long ago by Matsumura and then passed down over the years in secret and put together into shorin ryu that is practised today. Funakoshi did study shorin ryu and, as the story goes he remade it for the japanese public so that it would be better for exercise. Their are two villages that have contributed to the kata that are in shorin ryu Tomati and Shuri. So I have given you a little bit of info, it is up to you on whether or not you think it is "major" or not. |

Seriuosly, it's the oldest and biggest Okinawan style. I would strongly suggest it if it's street defence and power your looking for. _________________ If you can't laugh at yourself, there's no point. No point in what, you might ask? there's just no point.
Many people seem to take Karate to get a Black Belt, rather than getting a Black Belt to learn Karate. |
