I agree that nobody should hold the rank of Black Belt till age 16.Fortunatly the kids that have to wait in our art don,t got to keep going over the same old stuff till they reach that age.My instuctor has master ranks in several diffrent martial arts, and teaches them some auxillary art like Aki-jujistu or Goju-ryu Karate which they can actually gain ranks in so if theu hit 1st brown like at age 12 or 13,by the time they hit 16,they can go for 2 black belts which is really kool.

i think that if the student, parent, and instructor talk it through and agree not to get a junior black belt then it is fine. there is a girl at my school who just turned 7 and she is a black belt and a very good one at that!

I remember my first MA classes. There were kids there who had high level belts, and for the most part they were arrogant little gits who couldn't fight. I don't think it should be determined by strength, but these guys were sloppy technically and shouldn't have had such a belt for that reason alone.

"some dojos won't allow even a skilled person under sixteen to get their blackbelt until they are sixteen. Should age affect it?"

well if they have trained between 2-3 or over 3 years then they should be capable of getting the black belt, even when they are skilled too. so i think age shouldnt affect it because you see little kids get black belts and there way under 16 years of age.

i think 16 is the right age for someone to obtain their black belt, even if their technique is good, a person younger than that really cant exercise the right kind of control for a responsibity as big as that.

i can say with pride that at my school, at every belt test (which i also believe is kind of a scam, but that's for a different topic ), you are placed in front of a full panel of judges where you are not only graded (quite heavily, i might add) on your techniques, but are than given an oral exam on beliefs, philosophys, and general history of the art. as you climb the ranks, your general strength and power is graded as well. and before you can test, you have to take a form to all of your teachers at school (if your still in school) and have them verify that your doing alright and not being disruptive. you get another one for you parents saying your generaly pleasant and cleanly. i've found that it's nearly impossible for someone under the age of about 12 to get the rank of brown belt, and those who do are dedicated and talented enough. it cuts out everyone under 10, really, as they really don't have the mental maturity to contemplate difficult thoughts on philosphy and ethics, and they don't have the muscular development for strength; i don't know anyone who's fully mastered ki/chi.

Well, with my thought on the subject. What i would have is basicly a genral rule which stated that no under 16 could get into black belts. But i would have some sort of acception clause in there or something. But in special circumstaces it would allowed or if certin persons show amaze matutity. basic just commen sence really, in who ever judged grades and ranking really. But hay who am i to dectate what MA should do,
peace.

this really depends on your views on martial arts training.

at the end of the day, this is all for yourself. i mean, if the seven year old kid really deserves his black belt then good for him and well done on all that hard work. i don't see why he shouldn't get the belt, after all, the belt is a symbol of his learning and achievement.

what you should be addressing is not the students but instead looking at the ones giving out the belts.

I like that!

Really, I think it's less that we should have an "age limit", and more that if the student's are being graded strenuously, it's very unlikely that a 10 year old is going to get a black belt!
