your comparing apples and oranges when you compare sport to streetlife.

My HapKiDo instructor was training with an olypmic tkd dude and all he did was deflect a kick and come in with a simple BJJ lock and the guy was finished. He didn't know what to do.

im not "comparing" anything. im just stressing that its a self defense and id be able to hold my own, no matter how "silly" it looks as a sport.

Well, actually at the end, we all need to crosstrain, no matter if you are a TKD stylist or a BJJ or Muay Thai or whatever,

DON i do agree with you........it's the other entries in this thread that i refer to......i feel that any type of martial arts training does prepare you for street life. it may just be the confidence you exude or how to avoid the situation and not to become a victim.....as the others here know, i feel violence should be avoided at all cost unless protecting life, limb, justice or that of love ones, not to protect ego.

humble respects with a bow

new to this site..am reading alot about taekwondo sport and the decline from this....true taekwondo has become watered down since it has become an olympic sport..some reasons..too many rules...too many schools opened up by unqualified instructors..and too many black belts that are not ligitamite..however keep in mind that true taekwondo is very effective a properly trained taekwondoist can easily kill you with one kick and combined with hapkido it is very effective in a street fight so dont get it twisted what you see on tv or in your local tournament is not the essence of this korean martial art..

thanks rush........just gettin a little defensive( pun intended). Seems TKD was gettin dissed a bit in here. Im 43 years old, and have only had to use it 1 time in 15 years. I didnt even want to, either. Besides, whos gonna pay money to join a martial art to get their head knocked off if thats how they perceive TKD. Its ALL toned down. Thank you sirs and ma'ams.

I think the reason people are dissing the sport of taekwondo is perhaps they dont understand it or the sprt.

I must say myself after watching it on t.v. at the olypics, if i did not understand it i would also have to say it was boring, but because i do know what tkd is about it was very exciting to me to watch Laura Burns kick here opponents *.
