But isn't it quite "brutal"? Depends a little how good you are and how you see the whole situation... but if you are not hmmm.. thinking clear(?) enough..

That's a good observation actually. Self defense is more than just violence. It's controlled violence. You have to meet the threat but you don't want to meet it excessively if it comes back to bite you in the butt later on.
