I think I disagree. When sparing against a more aggressive opponent it's easy to get a feel for what it might be like in a real street fight. At the same time you get excellent practice in blocking reguardless of whether the actual consequences of not blocking would have been injuries or just recieving a "tag". I enjoy it.

I think Ts757's remark about a cricketer meant a knee to the groin won't work 'cause cricketers wear a box (cup) when playing, hence making a knee to the groin useless!!!

A knee to the groin is very effective and hurts.. Even if a person is wearing a steel cup, it sucks to get a knee there. At any rate, it will cause a reaction which can be taken advantage of.

Sparring is VERY important.
It gives us a chance to *sort of* see what being in a confrontation is like. It also allows us to work on different techniques with a partner. Through this we can discover what works and what doesn't.

Sparring is key. In Karate, we are taught that through our basics, are punches are strong. It is great and I have tried it and it works. The thing I like about Kumite is that it works on speed, distance, and timing. Plus, it is cool to see how much finesse you put into a move. Also if you see other people and how they fight it is a lot of fun and it is good slamming people to the floor.

Sparring is so important that it isn't funny! It shows you how to execute moves with power and timing without injuring some or getting injured your self. Sparring also allows for you to home in on your skills.
